Quintana del Pidio
Village
Quintana del Pidio is a municipality in the Burgos section of La Ribera comarca, between Gumiel de Mercado and Aranda de Duero, with 150 inhabitants. Its name refers to a medieval quintana, an agrarian estate worked by quinteros that belonged to a lord named Arpidio or Elpidio, from which "Quintana d'el Pidio" derived. It was originally royal property, until in 1190 Alfonso VIII of Castile exchanged it with the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos for lands in Tordesillas, from which point its vineyards gained importance, today the basis of an economy with notable wineries. The parish church, dedicated to Saint James the Apostle and situated on the Plaza Mayor, is Renaissance in style with a transition to Baroque, with a portico dated 1633 and a tower whose graceful figure, as described by Fray Valentín de la Cruz, watches over the vineyards; in the area of the wine presses stands the hermitage of the Virgen de los Olmos.
