What to see and do in Pradoluengo

Pradoluengo
Village
Pradoluengo is a town of Burgos nestled at 959 metres in a narrow valley of the sierra de la Demanda, in the comarca of Montes de Oca, with Garganchón as an annexe. Resettled by Biscayan and Alavese vassals between the 9th and 10th centuries, who left abundant place names in Basque, it was made a town by decree of Philip V in 1720. Its history is that of the textile industry, with origins in the 16th century: after specialising first in berets and later, in the late 19th century, in socks, this garment sustained it for centuries and reached its peak in the 20th century, when it came to produce more than 25% of the socks and berets sold in Spain; in 2020 it still had eight workshops. It retains the neo-Renaissance parish church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, completed in 1931. It now has 1,090 inhabitants.
The Spanish capital of the sock
Curiosity
From wool to the beret and from the beret to the sock: when the last beret factory closed in 2001 the village had already converted to knitwear, and its workshops today produce close to a quarter of the socks consumed in Spain.
The royal town privilege granted by Felipe V
Historical milestone
In 1720 Felipe V granted Pradoluengo the title of royal villa. The privilege came when its cloth industry, driven by the water of the river Oropesa, led peninsular manufacture of serges and baizes.
The climb to the peak of San Millán
Activity
From the village start circular routes towards San Millán, at 2,131 metres the highest summit of the province of Burgos, also known as El Torruco. The ascent crosses beech and oak woods of the Sierra de la Demanda.
