What to see and do in Fresneda de la Sierra Tirón

Fresneda de la Sierra Tirón
Village
Fresneda de la Sierra Tirón is the last village of Burgos in the sierra de la Demanda before La Rioja, in the comarca of Montes de Oca, with 98 inhabitants. Its territory once formed part of the old Valle de San Vicente, a territory between the Tirón and Urbión rivers that it shared with several neighbouring villages; its origins may go back to Roman times, from which stelae of the 2nd-3rd centuries are preserved, among them a phallus-shaped stone with a human figure found at Peña la Pastora and now on display in the main square. To the south of the territory lies hidden the Pozo Negro, a modest lake of glacial origin with greenish waters in the shade of the Otero peak, the only known habitat of a subspecies of palmate newt, Lissotriton helveticus punctillatus.
The source of the Tirón at Pozo Negro
Nature
The Tirón rises at 1,825 metres of altitude in the spot of Pozo Negro, within the Sierra de la Demanda and in the municipal district of Fresneda. The path that climbs to the spring crosses beech, ash and hazel woods.
The Fluvial Nature Reserve of the upper Tirón
Nature
The stretch that runs from the source to the village figures in the Catálogo Nacional de Reservas Hidrológicas as a representative example of a siliceous Mediterranean mountain river, with the channel practically free of alterations.
The Romanist altarpiece of the parish church of Fresneda
Monument
The church was raised in the middle of the sixteenth century and keeps a Romanist altarpiece attributed to the sculptor Rodrigo de la Haya, active in the Burgos circle; it is the greatest piece of the heritage of this hamlet on the flank of the Demanda.
The mushroom-picking reserve of Fresneda
Activity
The woodland of Fresneda is enclosed within the regional system of mycological use: gathering is done with a permit and by quotas, a formula that regulates the pressure on the beech and pine woods of the Demanda.
The mushrooms of the upper Tirón mountains
Food and drink
Saffron milk caps and boletus come out in autumn from the beech, oak and pine woods of the upper Tirón. Gathering, deeply rooted in the villages of the sierra, feeds the seasonal stews and has become one more economic resource.
