What to see and do in Tosantos

Tosantos
Village
Tosantos is a hamlet in the Montes de Oca district, in the province of Burgos, 42 kilometres from the capital, located on the French Camino de Santiago. Above the hamlet stands out the rock-cut hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña, carved into the limestone crag that overlooks it and which gives its name to one of its two festivals, alongside that of San Fernando. The Arancones caves also open within its boundaries. With an area of 5.74 square kilometres, it has 48 inhabitants.

Monument
Carved into the rock of a hill facing the village, it shows only its façade on the outside. It measures some sixteen metres in length by seven in width and keeps, in a Rococo altarpiece, the Romanesque carving of the Virgen de la Peña.

Activity
On 8 September the village climbs in procession to the sanctuary carved in the crag. The climb, short but steep, is also one of the most frequented detours by pilgrims between Belorado and Villafranca.
