What to see and do in Poza de la Sal

Poza de la Sal
Village
Poza de la Sal is a town in the comarca of La Bureba, in the north of the province of Burgos, perched on the slope of a sierra and fortified by the castle of the Rojas family, with 278 inhabitants. It was the ancient Salionca of the Autrigones and gained importance with the Roman conquest, becoming one of the main salt-producing centres of the area; at the end of the 9th century Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos resettled it and built its castle, in the same period in which Burgos was founded. Its old town preserves much of the medieval wall, five metres high, with three access gates — el Conjuradero, el Ayuntamiento and las Eras — and narrow, steep streets lined with heraldic stone houses and others of timber framing. Here the naturalist Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente was born in 1928, and its feast of San Blas is of regional tourist interest.

Nature
The village sits on a circular geological structure of some two and a half kilometres in radius, one of the largest salt diapirs in Europe: the salt that pushed up from the subsoil explains the whole history of the place.
The salt works at their peak
Historical milestone
Worked since Roman times, in 1845 the salt pans brought together thirty wells, twenty kilometres of brine channels and more than two thousand evaporation beds, with a capacity for eleven million kilos of salt a year.
The castle of the Rojas family
Monument
A castle situated atop a hill at whose foot Poza de la Sal (Burgos) lies, protected by the 1949 decree on Spanish castles. In the late 9th century Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos repopulated Poza and built the castle to defend the new territory, in the same period in which the castle of Pancorbo was raised and Burgos was founded. In the 14th century the Rodríguez de Rojas family built the present castle over that first one, and its walls left the town completely protected. Restored in 1808 by the French troops, it served as a prison for ambassadors of the Clementine League in 1528 and withstood continuous attacks by garrisons from Burgos until the end of the War of Independence.

Curiosity
The naturalist broadcaster who taught several generations to look at the countryside was born in this salt town of the Burgos páramo, and always attributed the origin of his vocation to its crags and its vultures.
The National Charanga Band Festival
Activity
On the first Saturday of May the streets of the walled quarter fill with bands come from all over Spain in an event that prolongs more than a century of musical tradition in this town of fewer than four hundred households.
