What to see and do in Salas de Bureba

Salas de Bureba
Village
Salas de Bureba lies to the east of the Valle de las Caderechas, on the left bank of the Homino river, whose flow rises from the aquifers of the páramo de Masa, between Castellanos and Poza de la Sal. It belonged to the cuadrilla of Caderechas, one of the seven of the old Merindad de Bureba; when the Old Regime disappeared it was constituted as the town council of the Briviesca district with 441 inhabitants. The church of Santa María depends on the parish of Poza de la Sal. Like most Castilian villages, it suffered intense depopulation from 1960 onward, when many residents emigrated to Burgos and the industrial area of Bilbao; it had a railway station on the Santander-Mediterráneo line until its closure in 1985. Today it has 129 inhabitants.

Food and drink
The guarantee mark created in 2004 covers ten varieties, among them the traditional fresona and the late black. The altitude of the valley delays ripening, so that picking runs from June into August.
