What to see and do in Abajas

Abajas
Village
Abajas is a village in the Burgos comarca of La Bureba, in the judicial district of Briviesca, with Bárcena de Bureba as a dependent hamlet, born in the repopulation of the 9th and 10th centuries. It sits in a hollow beneath the limestone wall of the Páramo de Masa. On its municipal land rises the río Castil, a tributary of the Homino, which runs through the Navas valley amid ravines such as those of Perozcampo and los Hornos; near the village it receives the río Mino, which springs at La Fuentona, a site fitted out as a much-visited recreational area, where the saline, limestone soil allows vineyards to be grown. Its church of Santa María la Mayor, Romanesque from the 12th century with an oven-vaulted apse, was declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico Nacional (a Spanish heritage protection designation) in 1981. It now has 28 inhabitants.
