Huérmeces
Village
Huérmeces is a municipality of 159 inhabitants in the valley of the river Úrbel, in the Odra-Pisuerga district, province of Burgos, joined by the settlements of Quintanilla-Pedro Abarca, Ruyales and San Pantaleón del Páramo, incorporated in 1978. Since 2017 it has been part of the Las Loras Geopark, the first Unesco geopark in Castilla y León, with golden eagle and eagle owl nests along the banks of the Úrbel. It preserves the palace of the Fernández-Zorrilla family and the tower that the Padilla family built in the 16th century, which later passed to the dukes of Abrantes and today is in progressive ruin, with only two of its walls still standing. The Franciscan Ángel Ortega and the Carmelite Silvano Villanueva González, murdered in 1936, are its notable figures.
