What to see and do in Montorio

Montorio
Village
Montorio is a municipality in the Burgos comarca of Odra-Pisuerga, about 30 kilometres from the capital, with 138 inhabitants; documented as Monte Aureo in the year 968, it has been included since 2017 in the Las Loras Geopark, the first Unesco geopark in Castile and León. It lies in the transition zone between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Duero Depression, watered by the Úrbel and Ubierna rivers, tributaries of the Arlanzón. For centuries it had a double seigneurial jurisdiction, under the duke of Frías in the District of Villadiego and under another lordship in that of Castrojeriz. Its economy combines cereal and potato farming with the mining of aggregates and sands. Its church of San Juan Bautista retains a Romanesque portal, and every 24 September it goes in pilgrimage to the hermitage of las Mercedes.
