Quintanaortuño
Village
Quintanaortuño is a municipality of the Alfoz de Burgos, in the province of Burgos, situated in the valley of the river Ubierna, where San Juan de Ortega, builder of bridges and hospitals for the pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago, was born in 1080. It has 297 inhabitants. The town's name may go back to a Roman origin, in the expression Quinta de Fortunio. It preserves the church of San Martín and a medieval bridge with a strongly humpbacked profile and limestone ashlar which, although traditionally attributed to San Juan de Ortega, is not confirmed by any studies; it linked two mills and provided a route to Burgos. In the north of the village there also stands a defensive tower, much altered after serving as a dwelling, dovecote and storehouse, which suffered a partial collapse in 2012.
