What to see and do in Úrbel del Castillo

Úrbel del Castillo
Village
Úrbel del Castillo is a municipality in the Páramos comarca, province of Burgos, situated on the banks of the Urbel river and the head of a municipality that also groups together the settlements of La Nuez de Arriba and Quintana del Pino. It has about fifty inhabitants, a figure that reflects the heavy depopulation suffered since the 1960s, when the young emigrated to the city of Burgos and to the Basque Country. The village is dominated by the castle of Úrbel, of medieval origin and 15th-century construction, built on a hill that already served as a watchtower in the 10th century and that gave its name to the village, born under its protection during the Reconquista. Its church is dedicated to the Virgen de las Candelas, and the municipal territory has belonged, since 2017, to the Las Loras Geopark, the first Unesco geopark in Castile and León.
Castle of Úrbel
Monument
A medieval tower whose origins go back to the 9th century, although the fabric seen today belongs to the 15th; it rises above the village as the lookout that probably gave the place its name.
Church of la Virgen de las Candelas
Monument
The parish church of a municipality that shares barely fifty residents between Úrbel del Castillo, La Nuez de Arriba and Quintana del Pino, crossed by the River Urbel in the heart of the Las Loras Geopark.
First mentions of Uluer
Historical milestone
The oldest written references to the place appear in 1121 in the forms Uluer or Ulver; in the census of 1787 jurisdiction over the village still belonged to the Duke of Frías.
