Las Hormazas
Village
Las Hormazas is a municipality of 93 inhabitants located in the highlands where the Hormazuela river rises, on its way to the Arlanzón, in north-western Burgos, nine kilometres from Villadiego. It is made up of three districts that never had separate councils — La Parte, Solano and Borcos — and the Espinosilla de San Bartolomé farm. Resettled around the mid-9th century by people who came with Count Rodrigo, the village was first called Hormaza and only took the name Las Hormazas from the 14th century; its first written mention, as Ormaza Mayor, appears in the Becerro Gótico de Cardeña of 1066. In 1237 it was the head of the Alfoz de Hormaza, under the tenant Gil Manrique de Manzanedo. Its traditional cuisine is associated with lamb roasted in a wood-fired oven and rice black puddings.
