What to see and do in Quismondo

Quismondo
Village
Quismondo, in the Torrijos comarca (Toledo), has 1,857 inhabitants (2025) at 548 m of altitude, in a landscape of gentle forms combined with flat areas watered by the arroyos de Prada, la Patiña y Aljama. Its name comes from the Germanic personal name of its resettler, Witimundus, related to other Galician-Portuguese place names such as Guizamonde or Queiximonde, which arose during the Christian resettlement process of the Reconquest. Its parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, notable for its tower, is accompanied by the ermita de San Roque; Domingo González Mateos, “Dominguín”, an influential figure of the Spanish bullfighting world, was born in the town in 1895, and it preserves the Tinaní, an old ceremony with five performers, dulzaina music and processional dances.

The church tower is one of its notable features, and the temple is accompanied by the hermitage of San Roque.
Dominguín, Bullfighter of Quismondo
Curiosity
Domingo González Mateos, known as Dominguín, was born in Quismondo on 4 August 1895 and became one of the most influential figures in Spanish bullfighting. He took his alternativa in Madrid on 26 September 1918, sponsored by Joselito, with a classical but uneven style in the ring, and after retiring became a leading apoderado, representing figures such as Manolete, Cagancho and Domingo Ortega. Married to Gracia Lucas Lorente, he had five children, three of them also bullfighters: Domingo, Pepe and Luis Miguel Dominguín, whom he led to success by pitting him against Manolete when he was still twenty years old. His descendants include the singer Miguel Bosé and the bullfighters Francisco and Cayetano Rivera Ordóñez. He died in Madrid on 21 August 1958.
El Tinaní of Quismondo
Activity
El Tinaní is an old festival of Quismondo (Toledo) celebrated every Easter Sunday. Five young people take part with fixed roles: the Abanderado, the strongest of the group, who carries a red and gold flag embroidered with the image of the Risen Christ at its centre; the Alcalde, the main character; the Mochiller, the only child in the procession; and two Alabarderos. All of them perform a series of ceremonies in honour of the Risen Christ and the Virgin Mary, accompanied by the music of the Castilian dulzaina and drum rolls, playing two simple, repetitive tunes, the pasacalles and the flag dance, considered circular dances of Renaissance structure.
