Hormigos
Village
Hormigos is a municipality in the Torrijos comarca, in the province of Toledo, in the valley of the río Alberche; its name may derive from the Latin formica, “ant”. In the early 15th century, the residents of the village of La Higuera del Campo began to abandon it because of health problems and founded, a short distance away, the settlement of Hormigos; of the abandoned village, a hermitage and the fig tree that gave it its name remained standing until the late 18th century. It belonged to the ducal lordship of Escalona and obtained the title of town in 1749. Its parish church of San Bartolomé, of solid and very old fabric, was enlarged in height and extent in 1630. It today lives from vineyards and livestock farming, with the Fuente Romero and Soto Alberche developments beside the river, and has 1,035 inhabitants.
