What to see and do in Santa Cruz del Retamar

Santa Cruz del Retamar
Village
Santa Cruz del Retamar is a municipality in the Torrijos comarca, in the north of Toledo, with 4,194 inhabitants (INE 2025) including the Calalberche development. Its name refers to the retamas (broom shrubs) that covered these flat, stony grounds, while Santa Cruz may be related to the paraje de Cruz Verde and an old Jewish quarter. After the Reconquest the area depended on the Montes de Alamín and later on the lordship of the dukes of Maqueda, Arcos and Altamira; the village was founded in the mid-15th century by Gutiérrez de Cárdenas, commander of León, and obtained the title of town in 1486. It preserves the ruins of the castillo de Alamín, head of an extensive frontier territory in the Andalusi and medieval periods, and its church of the Triunfo de la Santa Cruz holds a 15th-century baptismal font.
Castle of Alamín
Monument
Ruins of Alamín Castle, head of an extensive frontier territory in Andalusi and medieval times, located within the municipal district. It stood on a hill 60 metres above the river Alberche, controlling the crossing of the bridge over it; a fortification already existed there before the 10th century, recorded in the year 930 as Alfahmín or Alhamín, which surrendered to Abd al-Rahman III. After the reconquest of Toledo it passed into the hands of King Alfonso VI and later of the Archbishopric of Toledo, which in 1397 ordered it rebuilt and a bridge raised over the Alberche. It later belonged to Álvaro de Luna and the dukes of the Infantado, and from the 15th century it began its decline until it fell into ruin; today no remains survive of either the castle or the bridge, and the land is privately owned.
Church of el Triunfo de la Santa Cruz
Monument
Parish church which preserves a 15th-century baptismal font, the town's main historic building.
The Broom Shrubs That Named the Village
Curiosity
The name Santa Cruz del Retamar combines two origins: "Retamar" recalls that broom shrubs (retamas) once grew abundantly in the area, covering these flat, stony lands in the north of the province of Toledo, while "Santa Cruz" may come from a high spot to the northwest of the district known as Cruz Verde, possibly linked to a former Jewish settlement. According to Pascual Madoz's dictionary, the village was founded around 1480 by its territorial lord, the Duke of Maqueda, although other sources attribute its founding in the mid-15th century to the soldier Gutiérrez de Cárdenas. The town was granted the title of villa in 1486.
