What to see and do in Novés

Novés
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Torrijos, in the province of Toledo, whose principal defensive vestige is the castle of San Silvestre, raised in the fifteenth century by the commander Gutierre de Cárdenas; its church of San Pedro Apóstol was begun in 1190 and has a main chapel and transept of fifteenth-century Gothic art, and the Casa de las Cadenas occupies the site of the old synagogue, a reminder of the medieval Jewish community; some four and a half kilometres from the village the pilgrimage of Nuestra Señora de la Monjía is held.
Castle of San Silvestre
Monument
San Silvestre Castle stands beside the remains of the old village of San Silvestre —of which only a small parish church and a farmhouse survive— and is reached from Novés heading towards Santa Cruz del Retamar. It was built in the 15th century by the commander Gutierre de Cárdenas, as were the castles of Maqueda and Caudilla, with which it shares features such as granite arrow slits in the shape of the cross of Santiago. Small in size and square in plan, it retains three façades —one almost complete— with cylindrical towers on a truncated-cone base and double-merlon battlements, unique in the province; it lacks a keep, though beneath the building there are two vaulted rooms serving as a cellar. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1931, it is today a stabilised ruin, on a privately owned estate given over to cereal farming.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol de Novés
Monument
The church of San Pedro Apóstol in Novés, in the Torrijos district (Toledo), is the town's parish church. Its construction began in 1190 on the site of an earlier, already demolished church, and over the centuries chapels and other rooms were added up to the 18th century. Notable are the main chapel and the transept, in 15th-century Gothic style.
House of the Chains of Novés
Monument
Historic building in the town standing on the site of the former synagogue, a reminder of the medieval Jewish community.
Pilgrimage of Nuestra Señora de la Monjía
Activity
Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Monjía, to the hermitage located about four and a half kilometres from Novés (Toledo, Torrijos), renowned for its antiquity, its miracles and the great numbers of pilgrims it draws, which have made it known as the Fair of Novés. On 15 May the image of the Virgin, co-patron alongside Saint Michael the Archangel, is carried in procession from the church to the hermitage, to which she returns at the end of September for the town's patronal festivities.
