What to see and do in Santo Domingo-Caudilla

Santo Domingo-Caudilla
Village
Santo Domingo-Caudilla is a municipality of Torrijos, in Toledo, with 1,299 inhabitants (INE 2025), formed in 1973 from the union of Val de Santo Domingo, whose name comes from an old ermita dedicated to Santo Domingo de Silos, and the settlement of Caudilla. Val de Santo Domingo is already documented in 1216 and belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Maqueda; Caudilla, resettled in the 12th century by Old Castilians, hosted Henry IV on his way to Toledo. It preserves the ruins of the 15th-century castle that was the administrative head of Caudilla and the parish church of Santo Domingo de Silos, next to the ermita de Santa Ana. Its festivities are spread between the cultural week in July, Santiago and Santa Ana on the 25th and 26th of that month, and Santo Domingo de Silos in December.
Ruins of Caudilla Castle
Monument
Remains of the 15th-century castle that was the administrative head of the former place of Caudilla, today part of the municipality of Santo Domingo-Caudilla. The place name Caudilla may itself derive from the Latin caput (head), alluding to the fact that this place was the head of the state or territory presided over by the castle.
Church of Santo Domingo de Silos
Monument
Parish church dedicated to Santo Domingo de Silos, whose dedication recalls an old hermitage consecrated to the saint who gave his name to the settlement, formerly called Val de Santo Domingo for its location in a valley. The settlement is already mentioned in a Mozarabic document of 1216. Next to the church stands the hermitage of Santa Ana, in whose honour and that of Santiago festivities are held on 25 and 26 July.
The Merger of Val de Santo Domingo and Caudilla
Curiosity
The municipality of Santo Domingo-Caudilla was created in 1973 from the merger of Val de Santo Domingo and Caudilla. Val de Santo Domingo owes its name to its location in a valley and to an old hermitage consecrated to Santo Domingo de Silos. Caudilla, for its part, was resettled in the 12th century by old Castilians after the Reconquista; in the 15th century it hosted King Henry IV on his way to Toledo and took part in the defence of the district in 1477. Its name may come from the Latin cap-villa, head of town, alluding to its role as an administrative centre alongside the castle that stood there.
