What to see and do in Lucillos

Lucillos
Village
Lucillos is a municipality in the Torrijos comarca, in the province of Toledo, set on flat but elevated ground, softened by the climate of the Tajo valley. Already documented in 1220 as “Luzielos” in a note concerning a local clergyman, it depended as a hamlet on Talavera de la Reina and, from 1369, on the lordship of the archbishops of Toledo, until the early modern period. Its name comes from the Romance word “lucillo”, meaning tomb, derived from the Latin LOCELLVM. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with a brick tower in the Mudéjar tradition, preserves a 16th-century altarpiece of the Toledo school. During the 20th century it suffered intense depopulation through emigration to Talavera de la Reina and Madrid, down to the 666 inhabitants recorded by the INE in 2025.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Lucillos
Monument
Parish church of the Assumption of Our Lady, in Lucillos (Torrijos, Toledo), with a simple brick tower of Mudéjar tradition. Inside it preserves a 16th-century altarpiece by an unknown author of the Toledan school, made up of three tiers: the first two divided into five unequal bays and the third into three. On the predella are the holy apostles and, at the centre, the Theological Virtues; on the second tier stands the image of Our Lady of the Assumption, surrounded by cherubs, and on the third, a central bay with Santiago Matamoros flanked by reliefs of the Evangelists.
Lucillos, from Luzielos to Today
Curiosity
Lucillos, in the Torrijos district (Toledo), is first mentioned in 1220 as Luzielos, in an obituary note about a local clergyman named Petrus Michaelis. The village depended as a hamlet on Talavera de la Reina and, from 1369, on the lordship of the archbishops of Toledo, until the Catastro de Ensenada records that in 1752 it was granted to Cardinal Luis María de Borbón. Its name may come from the Latin locellum, little casket, or from val de lucillos, valley of the tombs.
