What to see and do in Cazalegas

Cazalegas
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Sierra de San Vicente, in the province of Toledo, whose place name appears written as Faztalegas in 1156 and whose floodplains were worked, after the reconquest, by people arriving from Talavera; its district holds the reservoir built in 1949 on the river Alberche, with some 150 hectares of water surface and a good point for observing waterbirds and raptors, and it preserves the church of San Vicente Mártir and an old watering trough decorated with Talavera tilework.
Reservoir of Cazalegas
Nature
The Cazalegas reservoir was built in 1949 on the river Alberche, a tributary of the Tagus, with a capacity of 7 cubic hectometres and about 150 hectares of water surface, to prevent flooding in nearby towns and to divert water to the Canal Bajo del Alberche. Its construction, together with that of the canal, used Republican prisoners from the Civil War as forced labour, and it was inaugurated that same year by Francisco Franco. Managed by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Tajo, it supplies water and irrigation to nearby market gardens and is an area for water sports such as wakesurfing or water-skiing, as well as swimming. It is also an excellent spot for observing waterfowl and birds of prey, and a popular place for fishing carp, barbel and boga.
Church of San Vicente Mártir de Cazalegas
Monument
Parish church dedicated to San Vicente Mártir, the religious centre of the town, which is also the patron saint of Cazalegas, celebrated on 22 January. Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico, from the mid-19th century, already listed this parish church as curato de entrada and de provisión ordinaria, confirming its age as the village's religious seat.
Ceramic Watering Trough of Cazalegas
Monument
Old watering trough decorated with Talavera tilework, located in the plaza de España of Cazalegas (Toledo) alongside other elements of the village's hydraulic heritage, such as the Caño and an old municipal water tank. It is an example of the use of regional ceramics in traditional street furniture.
The goblin of Cazalegas
Curiosity
During the 19th century a supposed case of unexplained phenomena in a house in the village made the so-called goblin of Cazalegas famous, and it even reached the press of the day.
Faztalegas, the 1156 name
Historical milestone
The place name appears written as Faztalegas in 1156 and as Caçalegar at the beginning of the sixteenth century, and has been linked to a Celtic root. After the reconquest of 1083 these floodplains were worked by settlers who came from Talavera.
