What to see and do in Illán de Vacas

Illán de Vacas
Village
Illán de Vacas, in the Torrijos comarca (Toledo), regularly ranks among Spain’s least populated municipalities, with barely 8 inhabitants (2025). Its name combines the Latin Iulianus, from the cult of San Illán, with the Arabic wakka; the first documentary reference dates from 1210, when Alfonso VIII, in Toledo, confirmed the boundaries between Talavera and Escalona, citing the place as Illán de las Baccas. It was then a hamlet of the Tierra de Talavera, attached to the parish of Horcajo de Talavera, and in the 17th century it was repopulated with thirty-seven families. It preserves the parish church of la Asunción de Nuestra Señora, next to the ruins of an old tannery, and the neo-Mudéjar railway station that operated from 1876 until its closure in the 1990s.

Former Station of Illán de Vacas-Cebolla
Monument
The old Illán de Vacas-Cebolla station (Torrijos, Toledo) entered service on 19 June 1876 with the opening of the railway section between Torrijos and Talavera de la Reina. It had a passenger building in neo-Mudéjar style, a goods dock, a well and cottages for the workers. In the early 1990s the few remaining structures were demolished owing to their ruinous state, and today only a railway staff's sentry box survives, next to the old Montearagón halt.
