What to see and do in Sartajada

Sartajada
Village
Sartajada, in the Sierra de San Vicente (Toledo), with 104 inhabitants (2025), takes its name from the sartín, a low-grade silver that was extracted in the La Mina area, at the foot of the Los Gijos hill; it was known for a pottery production of jugs and clay vessels now vanished. It belonged to the lordship of Navamorcuende and San Román, within the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Ávila, under the Dávila family and later the marquises of Abrantes; its origin as a settlement dates back to the 17th century and the oldest house is dated 1750. Through its territory runs the Torinas gorge, with natural pools amid Mediterranean vegetation, crossed by a Roman-medieval stone bridge next to a mill of Visigothic origin; the parish church of Santiago Apóstol is also preserved.
Bridge over the Torinas Gorge
Monument
Bridge crossing the garganta Torinas, a left-bank tributary of the river Tiétar, on the road linking the towns of La Iglesuela del Tiétar and Sartajada, in the Sierra de San Vicente (Toledo). It is an old three-arch Roman bridge, situated in the final stretch of the garganta's course, which runs for 18 kilometres through the municipal districts of Almendral de la Cañada, La Iglesuela del Tiétar and Sartajada before flowing into the Tiétar. The name of the garganta, according to various authors, may be related to the pre-Roman personal name Turos or to the word toro.
Sartajada, the Village of the Botijos
Curiosity
Sartajada is a small municipality in the province of Toledo, in the Tiétar valley, next to the Sierra de San Vicente and bordering Ávila; the river Tiétar waters its territory to the north. Today it has just over a hundred inhabitants, after heavy rural depopulation. It was known throughout the district for its pottery, a traditional activity that earned it the nickname of the village of the botijos, and which is documented in the study Los últimos alfareros de Sartajada (2012), although production has now disappeared. It retains the parish church of Santiago Apóstol, a bridge of Roman-medieval origin and traditional stone houses with Arab tiles, some dating from the 18th century.
The Silver Mine of Sartajada
Curiosity
The place name is linked to the sartín, a low-grade silver ore extracted in the area known as La Mina, within the municipal district. This place is located on the eastern slope of the Los Gijos area, which owes its name to the bare rocks left exposed after the ore was extracted. Mining activity predates the 17th century, the date when the origin of the village itself is documented, which points to an exploitation of medieval origin or even earlier.
Torinas Gorge
Nature
The garganta Torinas is a watercourse in the Sierra de San Vicente (Toledo), a tributary of the river Tiétar and therefore part of the Tajo basin. Over its eighteen-kilometre course it crosses the municipal districts of Almendral de la Cañada, La Iglesuela del Tiétar and Sartajada before flowing into the Tiétar, amid Mediterranean vegetation and natural pools. It is crossed by an old three-arch Roman bridge, situated on the road linking La Iglesuela del Tiétar with Sartajada. As for the origin of its name, the linguist Francisco Villar links it to the pre-Roman personal name Turos, while the historian Jiménez de Gregorio connects it with the word toro.
