What to see and do in Pedro Bernardo

Pedro Bernardo
Village
Pedro Bernardo is a town in the province of Ávila situated in the Tiétar valley, on the southern slope of the risco de la Sierpe, in the eastern foothills of the sierra de Gredos, from where the valley, the Sierra de San Vicente and even the Montes de Toledo can be seen, earning it the nickname balcony of the Tiétar. It has about 743 inhabitants. Its territory, delimited in the 17th century on breaking away from the Estado de Mombeltrán, preserves an old town hall from 1577 and a menhir from the fourth millennium BC in the dehesa de Cantogordo. Among its landmarks are the garganta de la Eliza, with a natural pool, and the Chorrera del Hornillo, twelve metres high. In 2014 the village revived the winter masquerade of the machurreros.
Church of San Pedro Advíncula
Monument
It was raised in the 17th and 18th centuries over a fabric of 1606 and combines Herrerian and Baroque elements. It holds a group of religious carvings of those same centuries and presides over the housing that has earned the village the nickname of balcony of the Tiétar.
The spoon-makers of Pedro Bernardo
Curiosity
The village made wooden spoons and spindles for generations, a trade that earned its residents the nickname of cuchareros. Alongside the carving, woollen weaving and leatherwork were kept up, crafts still alive in the municipality.
The "cuello de dama" figs
Food and drink
The fig tree of this variety is grown on the terraces of the district, alongside the olive grove and the vine, and its fruit is eaten fresh or dried in the sun. The figs share prominence with the oil in the village's traditional larder.
