What to see and do in Navamorcuende

Navamorcuende
Village
Navamorcuende is a municipality in the comarca of the Sierra de San Vicente, in the province of Toledo, located north of the Sierra del Piélago, at an altitude of 770 m; to the north runs the Tiétar and to the south the Guadyerbas. Its name combines nava with the personal name Morcuende - the count's meadows. It arose as a lordship in 1276, when the council of Ávila granted the common lands of Navamorcuende and Cardiel to Blasco Ximénez so that he would settle them. It later belonged to the lordship of the Dávila family, turned into a marquisate of that house in 1674, and to the province of Ávila until the territorial division of 1833. Its main monument is the church of Nuestra Señora de la Nava, from the 16th century, with a single nave and polygonal apse, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It has 581 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Nava
Monument
A 16th-century church with a single nave and a polygonal apse, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and the town's main monument.
Pyrenean Oak Forest of the Sierra de San Vicente
Nature
Extensive forest of Pyrenean oak on the slopes of the Sierra de San Vicente, one of the finest examples of this ecosystem in the province of Toledo. It extends alongside the road that climbs from Navamorcuende towards the top of the range, especially on the eastern side, where numerous chestnut trees grow alongside the oak wood, some more than 600 years old with trunks over 2 metres in diameter. In the area known as El Piélago, next to the road, there are several specimens 1.50 to 1.70 metres in diameter, and in denser areas others close to 2 metres. The land is also home to scattered holm oaks, Portuguese oaks, hawthorns and ash trees.
Reservoir of Guadyerbas
Nature
Reservoir some three kilometres south-east of the town on the River Guadyerbas, in a setting of dehesas and Mediterranean woodland.
The Lordship and Marquisate of Navamorcuende
Curiosity
The municipality began as a lordship in 1276, when the council of Ávila handed these lands over to Blasco Ximénez, and in 1674 it became a marquisate of the Dávila house.
From the province of Ávila to that of Toledo
Historical milestone
Navamorcuende belonged to the province of Ávila until the territorial division of 1833, which incorporated it into Toledo. It was then the head of a seigneurial estate with several towns under it, which explains its urban bearing against its present size.
The oil of the Sierra de San Vicente
Food and drink
The olive grove shares slopes with the chestnut and the Pyrenean oak wood and is pressed in mills of the comarca itself. The oil goes into the migas, into the chanfaina and into the stewed potatoes, the everyday dishes of the sierra repertoire.
