What to see and do in Almendral de la Cañada

Almendral de la Cañada
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Sierra de San Vicente, in the province of Toledo, resettled in the thirteenth century with peasants arriving from the land of Ávila and marked by the passage of the Cañada Real Leonesa; it preserves the dolmen of los Majanos, a megalithic tomb that is one of the oldest vestiges in the range, and the chapel of San Sebastián, of the sixteenth century, and Ana García Manzanas, Ana de San Bartolomé, a companion of Saint Teresa of Ávila, was born in it.
Dolmen of los Majanos
Nature
Prehistoric megalithic tomb at the site of Los Majanos, one of the oldest remains in the Sierra de San Vicente.
Hermitage of San Sebastián de Almendral
Monument
A 16th-century hermitage preserved in the municipal district, alongside that of the Cristo de la Sangre, built between the 17th and 18th centuries.
Ana de San Bartolomé, companion of Saint Teresa
Curiosity
Ana García Manzanas (1549-1626) was born in Almendral de la Cañada and was the inseparable companion of Saint Teresa of Ávila, later spreading the Carmelite reform through France and the Low Countries.
The Cañada Real Leonesa through Almendral
Curiosity
The Cañada Real Leonesa Oriental, some 700 km long, rises in the Montaña de Riaño, in the province of León, and ends at Montemolín, south of the province of Badajoz, also crossing Palencia, Valladolid, Segovia, Ávila, Toledo and Cáceres; it belonged to the Priorato de San Marcos de León, in the old Leonese province of the Order of Santiago. As it passes through Almendral de la Cañada, whose name, until 1916 Almendral de Arriba, recalls precisely this drovers' road, it shaped the town's livestock-farming history and accounts for much of its historical development.
Festival of la Virgen de la Antigua
Activity
Patronal festival of Almendral de la Cañada in honour of the Virgen de la Antigua, patroness of the municipality, held every 8 September with a procession and popular events. The devotion has deep roots in the town: the parish church, dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, was built between the 17th and 19th centuries.
The Ávila-origin resettlement of the sierra
Historical milestone
A good part of these towns was resettled in the thirteenth century with peasants who came from the land of Ávila, and not from Toledo. Hence the speech, the stone architecture and the festivities of the sierra have more of Old Castile than of La Mancha.
