What to see and do in Buenaventura

Buenaventura
Village
Buenaventura, whose name recalls the Italian saint Buenaventura de Fidanza, is a municipality in the Sierra de San Vicente comarca (Toledo), with 386 inhabitants (INE 2025), set on a flat at the foot of a hill in the Tiétar valley, whose river crosses the municipal area forming a corridor of riverside vegetation between the sierra and the foothills of the Gredos. It was a lordship town of the marquises of Navamorcuende until it gained its independence in the mid-18th century, when it had 110 houses and a school for 30 children. Its main historic building is the parish church of the Santa Cruz, next to the hermitages of San Sebastián and Buen Suceso, and in autumn it holds La Vaquilla, in which the release of a young cow through the streets of the village is re-enacted.
Church of la Santa Cruz de Buenaventura
Monument
Parish church dedicated to the Santa Cruz, the main historic building of this small locality in the Tiétar valley, in the Toledo Sierra de San Vicente. It dates from the 16th century and stands in the centre of the town, reached by first passing the ermita de San Sebastián, located at the entrance to the village. Together with the ermita del Buen Suceso, from the 18th century, it forms part of the most notable religious heritage of Buenaventura.
Hermitage of el Buen Suceso
Monument
Hermitage on the outskirts of the village, dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso and the centre of one of the main local celebrations, held on the last Saturday of September. In 1846 Pascual Madoz's Diccionario already mentioned it alongside the ermita de San Sebastián, describing both buildings at the time as half in ruins.
The Tiétar as it flows through Buenaventura
Nature
The river Tiétar flows about two kilometres from the centre of Buenaventura, marking the boundary of the municipality to the north and west after descending from the province of Ávila. Along its course it forms a corridor of riverside vegetation between the Sierra de San Vicente and the foothills of the Gredos, along one of the area's key river stretches.
La Vaquilla de Buenaventura
Activity
La Vaquilla de Buenaventura (Sierra de San Vicente, Toledo) is held on the second Saturday of October. It is a traditional autumn festivity in which the release of a young cow through the streets of the village is re-enacted.
