What to see and do in Casavieja

Casavieja
Village
Casavieja is a town in the comarca of Arenas de San Pedro, in the province of Ávila, set on the southern face of the sierra de Gredos, at the foot of its eastern massif and near the Tiétar river; it has about 1360 inhabitants. Its territory, of dense woodland and abundant pasture and forest, reaches 1993 metres at the Gamonosa, and several streams flow down towards the Tiétar, whose valley is followed by the CL-501 road, known as the autovía de los Pantanos. Casavieja preserves a 16th-century church with a Mudéjar top and the Roman bridge of la Márgara, and every 3 February it brings out the Zarramaches, a masquerade declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The patronal festival, in honour of San Bartolomé, is held on 24 August.
Los Zarramaches
Curiosity
Every 3 February, masked young men covered in cowbells go through the village in a winter masquerade recognised as cultural heritage. Its memory goes back to a prohibition issued in 1731 by the bishop of Ávila, which did not put an end to it.
