What to see and do in Lanzahíta

Lanzahíta
Village
Lanzahíta is a settlement in the comarca of Arenas de San Pedro, in the province of Ávila, situated at 448 metres above sea level on the southern slope of the sierra de Gredos, known as the heart of the Tiétar; it has a population of about 771 inhabitants. The dolmen of Robledoso, or Sepulcro del Moro, attests to human presence from the transition between the Neolithic and the Copper Age. Recorded since 1250, it formed part of the town of Colmenar de las Ferrerías until, in 1679, King Charles II granted it a town charter, separating it from Mombeltrán. It preserves the Romanesque bridge and the parish church of San Juan Bautista, from the 16th century, with a retable from the school of Berruguete, and shares with Hontanares the Cristo de la Luz pilgrimage, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional (an official tourism designation).
The main altarpiece of San Juan Bautista
Monument
The parish church, Gothic of the 16th century, holds a high altarpiece by Juan Frías and Pedro de Salamanca, the most valuable artistic piece of the municipality, in a village that appears in ecclesiastical records as early as 1250.
The gorge of la Eliza
Nature
The Eliza gorge, also called the Lanzahíta gorge, rises in a spot known as the Lagarejo and flows down from the mountains to the valley floor, at 447 metres, crossing the municipalities of Pedro Bernardo and Lanzahíta (Ávila) before flowing into the Tiétar river, of which it is a tributary within the Tajo basin. Its waters have long irrigated the village's market gardens, and it already appears described in Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico, in the entry devoted to Lanzahíta. A bridge on the old royal road along the Tiétar crosses it, and along its course pools and small waterfalls follow one another. In August 1990 a flood on the river caused several instances of damage in Pedro Bernardo.
