What to see and do in Chueca

Chueca
Village
Chueca is a municipality in the comarca of Montes de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, with 252 inhabitants (2025) over 11.12 km² at 738 m altitude, attached to the judicial district of Orgaz. Its name comes from the Arabic suwayka, diminutive of suq (small market or minor souk), evidence of its Andalusi origin: it was first a Mozarabic settlement used seasonally during harvests and appears as an alquería under the jurisdiction of Toledo in 1199; in the 19th century it had about 340 inhabitants. Its church of Santa María Magdalena, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, has a single nave with a main chapel and two side chapels and preserves a Mudéjar coffered ceiling that runs the length of the nave.
Church of Santa María Magdalena de Chueca
Monument
The church of Santa María Magdalena de Chueca (Montes de Toledo) is a building constructed between the 16th and 17th centuries in brick and rubble masonry, with ashlar of Toledo stonework in the upper sections of the tower. With a single nave, it has a main chapel and two side chapels in the arms of the transept, and preserves a coffered ceiling in the Mudéjar tradition that runs the length of the nave. At the entrance there is a granite baptismal font; above the door there used to be a raised choir loft, and a semicircular arch separates the nave from the presbytery.
Chueca, a place name of Arabic origin
Curiosity
The name of the municipality comes from the Arabic suwayka, a diminutive of suq (souk, small market), and reflects its origin as a seasonal settlement where the Mozarabs of Toledo would gather at harvest time. In the 12th century the place is documented as Assueca, and in Mozarabic texts with the variant Choca; the first mention as a rural settlement dates from 1199. The small market that gave the place its name eventually became its definitive toponym, a testimony to its Andalusi origin.
