What to see and do in Valdeverdeja

Valdeverdeja
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Campana de Oropesa, in the province of Toledo, set at the western end of the province, with a church of San Blas raised between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, the Casa del Arco — a building of 1876 declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) — and the ensemble of the Pozos Nuevos that supplied the town with water; its eighteenth-century chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados is the focus of the Función de Mayo, and on Carnival Sunday the townspeople bring out the town's traditional costume.
Church of San Blas de Valdeverdeja
Monument
Parish church built between the 16th and 18th centuries, the main monument of this town at the western edge of the province of Toledo. It has a cross-shaped floor plan and stands out for the height of its vaults and its dome, features that give it a notable presence within the urban fabric of Valdeverdeja.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados
Monument
The hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados, in Valdeverdeja (La Campana de Oropesa district, Toledo), is an 18th-century building erected over an earlier one from the 12th century, and preserves a calvary of some importance. It is the centre of the Función de Mayo, held on the first Sunday of May in honour of the town's patron saint: a procession carries the image from the church to the hermitage, where the privilege of lifting the Virgin onto her throne is auctioned off; afterwards, residents share a meal at the nearby picnic area, with games and live music.
House of the Arch
Monument
Building from 1876 declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 17 June 1992, one of the most distinctive examples of civil architecture in the La Campana de Oropesa district. Its most characteristic feature is a semicircular arch that, beneath a barrel vault, links two streets of the town.
New Wells
Monument
Pozos Nuevos is a site within the district of Valdeverdeja, in the Toledo district of La Campana de Oropesa, within the granite valley of the Tagus. It gathers several dozen wells, each with its stone washing trough carved from a single block, which supplied the town with water and were used for washing. The site is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in the category of historic site, as a testimony to the traditional everyday life of the area.
Festivities of San Blas de Valdeverdeja
Activity
The festivities of San Blas de Valdeverdeja (Toledo) are held on 3 February in honour of the town's patron saint, with religious acts and winter celebrations. That day cords are sold at the church which, worn around the neck like a necklace, are said to cure ailments of the throat, a devotional tradition specific to San Blas.
Carnival Sunday of Valdeverdeja
Activity
Domingo de Carnaval de Valdeverdeja (Toledo), declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional (an official regional tourist-interest designation). Residents bring out the local traditional costume, inspired by the dress of Lagartera: the animeras wear richly embroidered bridal or farmwoman dresses, and the animeros dress in black with a red scarf and a halberd. The day includes a parade of soldadesca to the beat of drums, jota dances and the flag-bearer's movements with the flag.
May Festival
Activity
The Función de Mayo, Valdeverdeja's main festivity in honour of its patron saint the Virgen de los Desamparados, is held on the first Sunday of May with a pilgrimage that carries the image from the church to its hermitage. There an auction is held to decide who will lift the Virgin onto her throne, and the day continues with meals and recreational activities next to the hermitage, enlivened by music.
The poor man's turrón
Food and drink
Sweet made from what was at hand, of dried figs kneaded together into which walnuts or almonds are set, with no more sugar than that of the fruit itself. It was prepared for the winter and is mentioned in the old descriptions of the village.
