What to see and do in Herreruela de Oropesa

Herreruela de Oropesa
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Campana de Oropesa, in the province of Toledo, documented as Ferreruela as early as 1156 — a name alluding to a small forge — and spread across the plain of the Campo Arañuelo with the Gredos range in the background; it preserves the church of San Ildefonso, of the sixteenth century, a Calvary of fourteen granite crosses on top of a hill and an ethnological museum, and its most cited product is the onion-and-rice blood sausage cold-cured.
Church of San Ildefonso de Herreruela de Oropesa
Monument
The church of San Ildefonso is the main monument of Herreruela de Oropesa (Toledo), in the Campana de Oropesa district. It was built in the 16th century as a single-nave temple, and its present Latin-cross plan is actually due to the lengthening of the nave and the addition of a transept in the mid-20th century. It has no bell tower, only a small three-bell gable, and its architecture does not follow any particular defined style. It is under the patronage of San Ildefonso, whose image presides over the main altarpiece, and it remains in use as the village parish, where religious services are held.
The Calvary of Herreruela
Monument
Well-preserved devotional ensemble atop a hill, with fourteen granite crosses, the setting for traditional Holy Week processions. Each cross, of stone and similar composition, rises on a cubic base between 90 and 110 centimetres wide and 80 high, with a crossarm about 120 centimetres long; its age is unknown. The traditional Way of the Cross is held on Good Friday mid-morning, and the ensemble is considered one of the best-preserved calvaries in the area.
Ethnological Museum of Herreruela de Oropesa
Monument
The Museo Etnológico de Herreruela de Oropesa, in the Campana de Oropesa district (Toledo), operates under the Fundación Museo Etnológico and is also known as the Museo de Pesas y Medidas Tradicionales. It brings together a collection of weights, measures and household items formerly used by the town's inhabitants, documenting their everyday life.
Ferreruela, the little forge
Curiosity
The name comes from little forge, and is documented as Ferreruela as early as 1156. The municipal district spreads across the plain of the Campo Arañuelo with the Sierra de Gredos in the background.
Festivities of San Ildefonso de Herreruela
Activity
The festivities of San Ildefonso of Herreruela de Oropesa (Toledo) are held from 22 to 25 January. During the nine days before the main day, 23 January, a novena is prayed in honour of the saint. On the 22nd vespers are held, with a mass presided over by the incoming mayordomo; on the 23rd, the main day, there are several masses and a midday procession through the village, along with the auction of the bearers of the processional litter; and on the 24th the mass of La Paz is celebrated, in memory of the deceased brethren of the confraternity. The mayordomo carries a gilded staff that is passed on each year, and residents wear medals bearing the saint's image and white ribbons, gold for former mayordomos and silver for those still awaiting their turn. The celebrations close with communal meals, open-air dances and night-time festivities.
Festival of la Amistad
Activity
Festival held in the second week of August in Herreruela de Oropesa, in memory of the residents who emigrated from the village, many of them to Blanes, in Girona, in search of work in industrialised areas. As it coincides with summer and often with the feast of the Virgen de la Paloma, it is the most crowded festival of the year, with open-air dances, games for children and adults, sports competitions, regional dances and a cavalcade in which women living outside the village take part as queen and maids of honour. It ends the following Tuesday with a communal dinner at the municipal sports centre.
The morcilla of Herreruela
Food and drink
Blood sausage of onion and rice cured in the cold that is cited by name in the stew of the comarca and in the pots of the neighbouring villages. It is the product that has kept the domestic slaughter alive in a municipality of few residents.
