Valdelacasa de Tajo

La Jara cacereña y Valdelacasa de Tajo
Historical milestone
The lands of the La Jara comarca, at the eastern edge of the province of Cáceres, were, from the Reconquest onward, dependent on the alfoz (administrative district) of the Toledan town of Talavera de la Reina. In 1249 Fernando III el Santo granted Talavera the Dehesa del Pedroso for grazing by its residents, which spurred the repopulation and founding of its settlements; from 1369 these lands became a lordship of the archbishops of Toledo by grant of Enrique II. It was not until 1833, with the new provincial division, that Valdelacasa de Tajo and the rest of the villages of La Jara in Cáceres ceased to depend on Talavera and became part of the province of Cáceres.

The first document mentioning the settlement as such dates from 1185. Within its territory stand the ruins of a castle of Arab origin, El Espechel, a witness to the medieval resettlement of the Tajo valley; the area belonged to Talavera until its incorporation into the province of Cáceres in 1833.
