Fuentelviejo
Village
Fuentelviejo is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, with 61 inhabitants, set on a natural terrace between an Alcarria plateau and the vega of the Prá stream, a tributary of the Tajuña; a spring rises beneath the village that probably gave the town its name. It had more than 600 inhabitants in 1591, but the bubonic plague of 1599 killed 187 people and the town did not recover until well into the 18th century. In 1430 King John II granted it to his courtier Íñigo López de Mendoza, marquis of Santillana, and from then on the counts of Tendilla and marquises of Mondéjar were its lords until 1811. It preserves the 16th-century church of San Miguel Arcángel, a pillory and the hermitage of San Roque, whose festival runs from 14 to 19 August.
