Moratilla de los Meleros
Village
Moratilla de los Meleros is a municipality of the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, founded by the Muslims — hence its name — on a rise between the vegas of two streams that flow into the Tajuña, at 842 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Alcarria plateau. It has 106 inhabitants (INE 2025), against 671 in the mid-19th century; its municipal area, renowned for honey, gave its name to the surname "de los Meleros". Documented since the mid-12th century, when Alfonso VII granted it to his captain Pedro Miguel, in 1174 Alfonso VIII handed it to the Order of Calatrava, whose masters had the parish church built, dedicated to the Asunción de Nuestra Señora. Its plateresque rollo-picota, from the early 16th century, was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 23 June 1992.
