Aranzueque
Village
Aranzueque is a municipality of La Alcarria, in Guadalajara, already settled in Muslim times beside the valley of the river Tajuña, with 411 inhabitants. Its origin is pre-Roman, and archaeological sites have been found at the Cerro de los Moros and El Castillejo, among them a Carpetani funerary mound. After the reconquest it remained a crown hamlet until, in 1430, King John II made it a town and granted it to Íñigo López de Mendoza, Marquis of Santillana, remaining under the seigniory of the Mendoza family well into the 19th century. It preserves a bridge over the Tajuña, beside which a Carlist battle was fought in 1837. Its parish church, dedicated to the Assumption, was completed in 1533, and the main festival is celebrated on the last Thursday of August in honour of Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
