Horche
Village
Horche is a municipality of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, 12 km from the provincial capital, on a plateau beside the valley of the river Ungría, a tributary of the Tajuña, at 895 m above sea level; it has 3,119 inhabitants according to the INE for 2025. Its name may come from the Latin Hortum, "little garden", or have a Mozarabic or Basque origin; until the 19th century it was written without an h, a letter imposed from 1851. Remains from the Palaeolithic and the Bronze Age have been found in its municipal area, and some identify the pre-Roman settlement with the Carpetanian Illarcurris. Its church of the Asunción was enlarged in 1563 and the presbytery completed in 1587, and the town centre preserves the hermitage of San Sebastián, the pillory of 1538, the 1578 washhouse and the hermitage of the Virgen de la Soledad, consecrated on 18 July 1565, patroness of the Fiesta Grande on 8 September.
