Tendilla
Village
Tendilla is a municipality in the comarca of La Alcarria, in the province of Guadalajara, with 353 inhabitants (INE 2025). It was separated from the commons of Guadalajara and raised to town status by Henry III of Castile in 1394, who donated it to Admiral Diego Hurtado de Mendoza; his son, the Marquis of Santillana, had the castle built, and the first Count of Tendilla founded the Jeronymite monastery of Santa Ana here in 1473. Its San Matías fair came to be one of the best in the Castilian kingdom. It retains arcades on the calle Mayor, remains of a medieval wall, the 15th-century Fuente Vieja and the church of the Asunción, from the 16th century and never finished, and celebrates that fair on the weekend closest to 24 February and its patronal festivities from 7 to 12 September, in honour of the Virgen de la Salceda.
