Armuña de Tajuña
Village
Armuña de Tajuña is a municipality of La Alcarria, in Guadalajara, at 712 metres above sea level on a plateau-like hill at the confluence of the river Tajuña with the Prá stream. Its etymology, from the Arabic Al-Munya, “the orchard”, reveals a Muslim origin mentioned in Almanzor's campaign of the year 980. After the reconquest of the valley by count Álvar Fáñez in 1085, it remained under the royal charter of Guadalajara until, in 1428, John II granted it, together with eleven other hamlets, to his sister the infanta Catalina; in 1430 it was raised to the status of town and handed to Íñigo López de Mendoza, Marquis of Santillana. It preserves remains from the second Iron Age, with a pre-Roman hillfort at Cerro Castejón, and a Visigothic necropolis from the 6th-7th centuries. Its church of San Martín de Tours is from the 16th century. The festivals are divided between the Cristo de Mayo on 18 May, the Cristo de la Misericordia, moved since 1978 to the third Friday of August, and San Martín on 11 November. It has 280 inhabitants.
