What to see and do in Carrizosa

Carrizosa
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Montiel, in the province of Ciudad Real, set at 824 metres and crossed by the river Cañamares, which opens a green corridor between cereals, vineyards and olive groves; in its district are preserved the ruins of the castle of Peñaflor, raised around the year 720 by Berber settlers and conquered by the knights of Santiago in 1186. Its church of Santa Catalina was completed in 1493, the chapel of the Virgen del Salido is the goal of the best-attended pilgrimage, and through the streets and surroundings are spread the fourteen crosses of a Way of the Cross.
Church of Santa Catalina de Carrizosa
Monument
The Iglesia de Santa Catalina is the parish church of Carrizosa, in the Campo de Montiel (Ciudad Real), completed in 1493. The original structure consisted of a single nave on four ashlar stone arches, roofed with white pine wood and reed, with the cemetery adjoining on the west side. Inside it preserves frescoes painted in 1942 by Jesús Velasco Espinosa, with scenes such as the ascension into heaven of Santa Catalina, the four evangelists accompanied by their symbolic animals, the Last Supper, and Jesus as a shepherd. In the first decade of the 2000s the paintings underwent a controversial restoration, which damaged part of the original work.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Salido
Monument
The shrine of the patron saint of Carrizosa, around which an old legend of divine intervention survives. It is the destination of the municipality's best attended pilgrimage festival.
Castle of Peñaflor
Monument
The ruins of the Peñaflor fortress, built around the year 720 by Berber settlers and conquered by the knights of the Order of Santiago in 1186, stand on the cerro castellón hill, in the municipality of Carrizosa, next to the hermitage of the Virgen del Salido, situated at the foot of the same hill.
The Cañamares River in Carrizosa
Nature
The Cañamares river rises near the hamlet of the same name, which belongs to Villahermosa, at the spot known as Fuensomera, where it forms a small canyon that locals call el Pasadero. It skirts the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Carrasca, patroness of Villahermosa, and shortly afterwards enters the municipality of Carrizosa, which it crosses through its lower part at 824 metres above sea level, creating a green corridor amid the cereal fields, vineyards and olive groves of the Campo de Montiel; at times its floods have caused overflows. A few kilometres further on it flows into the Azuer river, of which it is a right-bank tributary, already within the Guadiana river basin.
May Crosses of Carrizosa
Activity
Celebration of the Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses) in Carrizosa, with crosses decorated by the residents and communal events over three days, from 2 to 4 May. The crosses, set up as altars in houses, are adorned with flowers and plant elements together with symbols of the Passion such as nails and crowns of thorns, and are lit on the 2nd at three in the afternoon. That same afternoon a street Way of the Cross with fourteen stations is opened to the public, followed by groups singing coplas to the Cross, and during the three days it is customary to offer refreshments to those who visit the crosses. The tradition, of pagan origin as a spring festival and later Christianised in honour of the Passion, is preserved in Carrizosa with all its traditional flavour.
Way of the Cross of Carrizosa
Monument
The Way of the Cross of Carrizosa runs past fourteen crosses set on the façades of houses throughout the village, in the Campo de Montiel area of Ciudad Real province. The residents themselves look after and decorate each of the crosses throughout the year. On the afternoon and evening of 2 May the full route is opened to the public, and various local groups sing traditional coplas at each station as the streets are walked, in a celebration that turns the devotional route into a living element of the town's urban landscape.
