What to see and do in Alhambra

Alhambra
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Montiel, in the province of Ciudad Real, in whose district the classical sources place the Roman city of Laminio, a road station whose material still comes to light beside the parish church, a temple begun in 1214 over an old Roman building and beneath whose high altar a crypt has been discovered. It is crowned by a castle of the Order of Santiago of polygonal plan, today on the Red List of heritage at risk, and its range culminates in the Juego de Bolos, at 1,088 metres, in a district also crossed by the river Azuer.
Castle of Alhambra
Monument
The Castillo de Alhambra, possibly of Umayyad origin although the surviving remains date from the 13th century onward, stands south of the village of the same name, on a bare, cone-shaped hill just over 800 metres above sea level. After the conquest of Toledo, Alfonso VII took it in the mid-12th century; lost after the Battle of Alarcos in 1195, it was recovered in 1212 by Alfonso VIII, who in 1214 handed the fortress over to the Order of Santiago. Its current polygonal layout, oval-shaped and adapted to the relief of the hill, with fourteen sides and a perimeter of about 100 metres, is attributed to Count Álvaro Núñez de Lara. Despite its ruined state, all its walls remain standing, almost two metres thick. It is listed on Hispania Nostra's Red List of Heritage at Risk.
Church of San Bartolomé Apóstol de Alhambra
Monument
A church whose construction was begun in 1214 over a former Roman building. Its nave is covered by a lath-and-plaster false vault with lunettes, and a crypt has been discovered beneath the high altar.
Washhouses of Alhambra
Monument
Public washhouses built in the 1940s, rectangular in plan, with central basins and large arched windows that light the interior.
Mountain range of Alhambra
Nature
A relief landscape reaching its highest point at the Juego de Bolos, at 1,088 metres, the greatest elevation in the municipality. The río Azuer also flows through the municipality. The sierra extends north of the Azuer, which crosses the municipality from southeast to northwest and receives streams such as the Masegosa and the Alhambra; the land descends to 730 metres near the river, compared with 862 metres at the village. The Sierra de Alhambra is one of the municipality's waymarked hiking routes.
Laminio, the lost Roman city
Curiosity
Classical sources place the Roman city of Laminio in the municipal district of Alhambra, a staging post on a Roman road from which material still turns up close to the parish church.
Las gachas manchegas
Food and drink
Grass-pea flour toasted and stirred with water, oil, garlic and dried pepper until a dense paste is obtained, finished off with pork rinds. It is eaten from the pan and in many households there is a game of leaving the last mouthful to the slowest.
