What to see and do in Montiel

Montiel
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Montiel, in the province of Ciudad Real, dominated by the castle of la Estrella, a fortress of Muslim origin of the tenth century raised on a great rocky crest, of oval plan and close to six thousand square metres, where in 1369 Peter I of Castile took refuge after being defeated on the plain by the troops of his half-brother Henry of Trastámara and where he died nine days later. That episode is recalled every year in Montiel Medieval, a re-enactment declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest; some five kilometres from the village, at a thousand metres above sea level, rise the Ojos del Jabalón, the source of the main tributary of the upper Guadiana.

Parish church of Montiel that was originally a hermitage; in 1440 Prince Henry of Aragon ordered the construction of the present building, inaugurated in 1474, with a tower of Italian Renaissance style that collapsed in December 1895 and was rebuilt in the early 20th century. It has a single nave with six adjoining chapels, the most important dedicated to the Virgen de las Nieves, an image brought from Torres.

Monument
The hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo de la Expiración of Montiel (Campo de Montiel, Ciudad Real) has its origin in 1243, when the Order of Santiago built a vicarage there that centuries later became a convent. After this burned down in the 15th century, the present hermitage was built, one of the oldest buildings preserved in Montiel, with three naves dedicated to the Santísimo Cristo, to the apostle Santiago and to the Virgen del Socorro.
The Ojos del Jabalón springs
Nature

The death of Peter I in 1369
Curiosity
On 23 March 1369, after the battle of Montiel and nine days under siege in the Castillo de la Estrella, Pedro I of Castile died at the hands of his half-brother Enrique de Trastámara, changing the course of the Castilian monarchy.
La batalla de Montiel
Historical milestone
The Battle of Montiel, fought on 14 March 1369 around this town, was the outcome of the Castilian civil war between Peter I and his half-brother Henry of Trastámara, a conflict that also formed part of the Hundred Years' War: France backed Henry's claim to the throne by sending the constable Bertrand du Guesclin, while England, through the Black Prince, supported Peter with arms and men. After the allied defeat at Nájera in 1367, Henry gathered a Castilian-French army which, with Du Guesclin's mercenaries, defeated Peter's troops on the plain of Montiel; the defeated king took refuge in the castle of La Estrella, where he would die nine days later.
Los galianos
Food and drink
The name given in the Campo de Montiel to the Manchegan gazpacho: broth of rabbit, hare or partridge with mushrooms and herbs, set over pieces of unleavened flatbread. It was the shepherds' meal and is served in the pan itself.
