What to see and do in Fuenllana

Fuenllana
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Montiel, in the province of Ciudad Real, birthplace of Tomás García Martínez, the Augustinian canonised in 1658 as Saint Thomas of Villanova and known as the almsgiver, over whose birthplace a convent of the Order of Saint Augustine was raised in the seventeenth century; the philosopher Antonio Rodríguez Huéscar, a disciple of Ortega y Gasset, was also born here. It preserves the ruins of the castle-church of Santa Catalina, of the fifteenth century and raised making use of a fortified structure, an old stone bridge over the Tortillo stream and the Rincón del Pastor, a space devoted to the pastoral tradition.
Castle-church of Santa Catalina
Monument
The castle-church of Santa Catalina occupies the cerro del Torreón hill, in Fuenllana (Ciudad Real), with the site's occupation phases superimposed: a medieval 13th-century fortress, built by the Order of Santiago to defend the hamlet during the Reconquista, and a 15th- and 16th-century church built after its walls were pulled down in the mid-15th century, probably starting from the chapel that existed within the enclosure. The main construction work on the church, dedicated to Santa Catalina de Alejandría, concluded at the end of the 16th century, but by the mid-18th century the temple had ceased to be the centre of the village in favour of the new church of Santo Tomás de Villanueva, and was dismantled. The hill continued to be used as a cemetery until it was abandoned in the early 20th century, and today it is preserved as a ruin.
Convent of la Orden de San Agustín de Fuenllana
Monument
Augustinian convent built in Fuenllana, in the Campo de Montiel area, in the 17th century on the birth house of Santo Tomás de Villanueva, archbishop of Valencia born in the town; before that, a hermitage had stood on the same site. Secularised in the 19th century, its original church was destroyed in the 1960s, in a notorious case of corruption by the Francoist municipal council. Today the complex houses a modern church together with municipal offices of the village.
Bridge of el río Tortillo
Monument
An old stone bridge over the Tortillo stream in the municipal district of Fuenllana, one of the most singular features of its civil heritage.
Saint Thomas of Villanueva, son of Fuenllana
Curiosity
Fuenllana (Ciudad Real) claims to be the birthplace of Santo Tomás de Villanueva, Augustinian archbishop born at the end of 1486; according to his biography, his parents took refuge, fleeing a plague epidemic, at Casa Valdés, between Villanueva de los Infantes and Fuenllana, where his maternal grandparents lived, and the child was baptised in the parish of Fuenllana. In the 17th century a convent was built in the village on the site traditionally pointed to as his birth house. Fuenllana was also the birthplace of the philosopher Antonio Rodríguez Huéscar, a disciple of José Ortega y Gasset.
The Shepherd's Corner
Curiosity
A commemorative space in Fuenllana that pays tribute to the shepherding tradition through ceramic tiles bearing a local shepherd's knowledge about the care of animals.
