What to see and do in Cózar

Cózar
Village
Municipality of the comarca of Campo de Montiel, in the province of Ciudad Real, which had depended on Montiel since the Fuero of 1274 and obtained its independence in 1554 after paying the Crown 1,350,800 maravedís; its church of San Vicente Mártir, of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985), is considered one of the finest in the Campo de Montiel. It preserves the chapels of the Virgen de la Soledad, its patroness, of the Santo Cristo and of San Antón, and during the celebrations of the Santísimo Cristo de la Veracruz the well-attended festival of las Tacillas takes place.
Church of San Vicente Mártir
Monument
The church of San Vicente, in Cózar, dedicated to San Vicente the martyr, is a temple of the 15th and 16th centuries considered one of the finest in the Campo de Montiel. On 23 February 1983 it was declared a national historic-artistic monument, by royal decree published on 18 April of that same year in the Boletín Oficial del Estado, and it now holds the status of Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The historical accounts gathered in Pascual Madoz's Dictionary already highlighted its sacristy as the finest in the district.
Hermitage of la Virgen de la Soledad
Monument
The hermitage of the patron saint of Cózar, a building with a single nave and a rectangular plan of about fourteen by eight metres. The municipality also keeps the hermitages of El Santo Cristo and San Antón.
The Tacillas of Cózar
Activity
A hugely popular celebration that accompanies the patron saint festivities of the Santísimo Cristo de la Veracruz in Cózar.
The price of Cózar's independence
Curiosity
Cózar (Campo de Montiel, Ciudad Real) was dependent on Montiel from 1274, when Gonzalo Ruiz Girón granted the Fuero de Montiel, by which Cózar and Alcubillas were handed over to that town; other sources place the event in 1275, under the mastership of Pelayo Pérez, of the Order of Santiago. Independence came in 1554, when Cózar paid the Crown 1,350,800 maravedís after nearly 280 years of subordination.
