What to see and do in Morata de Jalón

Morata de Jalón
Village
Morata de Jalón is a wine-growing municipality of Valdejalón, in the province of Zaragoza, next to the Jalón river, at 415 metres above sea level and 64 kilometres from the capital. Its 17th-century church of Santa Ana is attached to the palace of the counts of Argillo, built between 1672 and 1676. The oldest document mentioning the town dates from 1178, when the countess of Pallars, doña Oria, donated Morata and its castle to the Monastery of Casbas. In the Middle Ages the population settled on the hill of the hermitage of Santa Bárbara, of which remains survive of the fortress and the old town wall, with two gates: one next to the present town hall, and another, the 'arch of the gateway', which remained standing until the 1960s. In the mid-19th century it had 1,425 inhabitants; today it has 1,100.
Church of Morata de Jalón
Monument
The church of Santa Ana of Morata de Jalón, from the 17th century, is attached to the palace of the counts of Argillo, built between 1672 and 1676. It is a Baroque building whose facade preserves a sundial, and whose tower combines a square lower section in rubble masonry with an octagonal upper section in brick. When the palace was built, the already existing church was remodelled to integrate it into the complex, so that liturgical services could be followed from the count's residence itself.
