Saviñán
Village
Saviñán (Sabiñán) is a municipality in the province of Zaragoza, in the Comunidad de Calatayud, on the right bank of the Jalón valley, at an altitude of 451 metres; it has 697 inhabitants, known as «caracoleros» for their fondness for gathering snails after rain. Its founding is attributed to the Roman Sabinius Sabinianus, and it was reconquered by Alfonso I the Battler in 1120; it later had a significant Morisco community, with its own morería and mosque, until the expulsion of about 600 Moriscos in 1610. Its church of San Pedro is of Mudéjar origin, although the present building, baroque, was commissioned in 1626 from the master Juan Segura and built in the second half of the 17th century. Sabiñán is the cradle of arboriculture in Aragon, famous for its nurseries and its black negral olives.
