What to see and do in Chodes

Chodes
Village
Chodes is a municipality of 98 inhabitants (INE 2025) at 412 metres above sea level, in the comarca of Valdejalón, between the Jalón and Isuela rivers. The village was moved in 1676 from the Peña de Iodos, where the houses were at risk of collapse, when the Marquis of Villaverde, Francisco Sanz de Cortés, ordered a new square to be built with twenty-four houses and three gateways, completed in 1678. Its church of San Miguel Arcángel preserves a main altarpiece by Manuel Bayeu. The municipality includes the depopulated exclave of Villanueva de Jalón, whose Muslim castle was reconquered by Alfonso I in 1119 and whose Aragonese Mudejar church tower of Santa María de la Huerta was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2001; that village, abandoned in the 1950s, was incorporated into Chodes in 1852.
