Calmarza
Village
Calmarza is a small municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, lying beside the Mesa river, in a rocky, very dry landscape where large flocks of vultures fly overhead and vegetation is confined to the riverbanks. It has 57 inhabitants, compared with the 204 it had in the mid-19th century. About 12 km away is Jaraba, with its spa resorts, from where the Piedra monastery and the Gallocanta lagoon can also be visited. It preserves the church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, the remains of Calmarza castle and the tower of the Palafox family of Ariza. Its winter festival is on 3 February, San Blas, and its summer one in the second-to-last week of August.
