What to see and do in Nuévalos

Nuévalos
Village
Nuévalos is a municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud, in the province of Zaragoza, with 318 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated next to the Tranquera reservoir, at the confluence of the Piedra and Ortiz rivers, at an altitude of 724 metres. Its castle was linked from 1156 to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Calatayud, which received the lordship from Ramon Berenguer IV. During the War of the Two Peters, the castle was one of the few in the comarca to resist the invasion of Peter I of Castile without surrendering, despite attacks in 1362 and 1374. Beneath the hermitage of the Virgen de los Diegos a Celtiberian and Roman site is preserved. A municipality that hosts the Monasterio de Piedra, with its famous natural park of waterfalls and caves.
Monastery of Piedra
Monument
The Monasterio de Piedra, dedicated to Santa María la Blanca, was founded in 1194 by thirteen Cistercian monks who came from Poblet and settled beside the Piedra river on the site of the old castle of Piedra Vieja. It was abandoned in 1835 with the Mendizábal disentailment and, bought five years later by a private individual, was converted into a tourist establishment; it was listed as a Monumento Nacional in 1983. Its construction took place in three stages — the primitive Gothic of the 13th century, the Renaissance Gothic of the 16th, and the classical-baroque of the 18th — and the walled precinct is entered through the medieval keep tower (torre del homenaje). Notable features include the cloister with its large pointed arches and capitals with foliage carving of Byzantine inspiration, and the main staircase, which unfolds in two flights beneath a vault.
Monasterio de Piedra Natural Park
Nature
The Parque Natural del Monasterio de Piedra brings together a dozen lakes and waterfalls of the Piedra river, among them the Cola de Caballo, with a 90-metre drop, along with numerous caves discovered by the park's founder, and lakes such as the Lago Espejo and the Lago de los Patos, covered by about five kilometres of marked trails. The Cistercian monastery that gives its name to the complex was founded in 1194 by thirteen monks who came from Poblet and was abandoned in 1835 with the Mendizábal disentailment. In 1844 Juan Federico Muntadas converted its conventual buildings into a hotel and hydrotherapy establishment, the seed of the present-day park, which was declared a Paraje Pintoresco Nacional (National Picturesque Site) on 28 December 1945.
