Campillo de Aragón
Village
Campillo de Aragón is a municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in the province of Zaragoza, with 111 inhabitants, situated at 1,054 metres in altitude and bordering the province of Guadalajara, in the former Lordship of Molina de Aragón. Its present-day population dates back to the Reconquest, and according to oral tradition there was a Muslim settlement at the site of La Cruceta. The earliest record of the current settlement comes from a document of the Piedra monastery mentioning a certain Domingo, lord of Campillo; in the 15th century it belonged to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, unlike neighbouring Monterde, which did form part of the comunidad de aldeas de Calatayud. It preserves an elongated castle with two defensive towers and the church of San Juan Bautista, with fortress-like elements.
