What to see and do in Cervera de la Cañada

Cervera de la Cañada
Village
Cervera de la Cañada is a municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in the province of Zaragoza, 93 km from the provincial capital, with 263 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name, of pre-Latin origin, is thought to combine the root kar or ker, "rock", with the Ibero-Basque suffix -erri, "place", meaning "place on the rock", a description that fits the village's location, at 693 metres in altitude between the valley of the rambla de Ribota and the sierra de Armantes. The municipality preserves the parish church of Santa Tecla, in Mudéjar style, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2001 as one of the representative examples of this style in Aragon.
Mudéjar Church of Santa Tecla, Cervera de la Cañada
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, popularly known as the church of Santa Tecla, is a Catholic parish church in Gothic-Mudéjar style built between the 14th and 17th centuries in Cervera de la Cañada, a clear example of a fortified church. It belongs to the archpriesthood of Calatayud, within the diocese of Tarazona, and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1943. Unesco named it one of the representative buildings of Aragonese Mudéjar architecture when it extended in 2001 the World Heritage declaration granted in 1986 to this architecture; it covers an area of 0.027 hectares, with a protection zone of 0.242 hectares around it.
