Torrijo de la Cañada
Village
Torrijo de la Cañada is a municipality of the Community of Calatayud, in Zaragoza, with 187 inhabitants (2025), at 725 metres of altitude in the valley of the Manubles river. It was the ancient Celtiberian Termes, attacked in 137 BC by the proconsul Quintus Pompeius, according to Appian's account, with the loss of 700 men; Christian tradition places on the site of its parish church the beheading of Saints Felix and Regula, in the year 300. Reconquered in the 12th century by Alfonso I the Battler, it suffered the effects of the War of the Two Pedros and in 1358 passed into the hands of Peter of Castile. It preserves the Gothic church of Nuestra Señora del Hortal, with a flamboyant tower reinforced in the 16th century, and a tower-bridge from the old wall, today a well-preserved historic ensemble.
